I only visited Fukushima once. Comparing to other large and capital cities in Tohoku Region, Fukushima City is not in my Top Ranks (Aomori, Akita, etc), however the location is much nearer to Tokyo. I visited Nihommatsu Chochin Matsuri which was less than 10 train stops away from Fukushima. While it was difficult to find hotels there, Fukushima is actually the best alternative for the visitors. It was also a quiet city, good feelings when I was there. The disadvantage was you would not be able to find good food in certain hours and locations.
A compact size of Tokyo. I would say the city could probably be a capital city of southern Tohoku area. The food, specially ox tongue, is so mouthwatering and delicious. Shopping is one of the thing that you would enjoy doing here, right next to Sendai station with lots of designer's brand stores. We got a rare handbag here in Sendai store while it's almost impossible to get one in Tokyo or other big cities.
It is easy and fast to reach Morioka by Shinkansen train from Tokyo and therefore a convenient start point for visiting many tourist attractions in Tohoku region.
This was a great base to travel through the Tohoku region after the tsunami. The people in this area are very friendly and helpful.
Lack of attractions, what few there were had no English descriptions, service was poorer than other prefectures in Tohoku, lack of variety in places to eat. However, fantastic coffee was found at Tsuki Cafe!
Sendai City is famous for its beef tongue and seafood (oyster especially). The beautiful Mastushima as well as onsen towns are nearby. A lovely place to visit and a pit stop to other cities in Tohoku.
Sendai is a great "base of operations" for a visit to the Tohoku area in Japan. If this is your first trip to the country, make sure to visit Tokyo and Kyoto and enjoy all that those two great cities have to offer first, but if you have already done that or feel like something a little different, then Sendai is a good option. Situated one hour and a half shinkansen ride from Tokyo, Tohoku has mountain trails (like in Zao Onsen), some of the most beautiful landscapes in Japan (such as Matsushima) and amazing places "off the beaten track" such as Yamadera, Tono Valley or Hiraizumi. Sendai itself deserves one or two days of quiet walks and getting in touch with the Japanese way of life. Although it is a big city with almost one million people, the pace of life is gentler here and you will be able to enjoy the local culture (including Onsen and Izakaya life and the well known local cuisine.
I wish I could have spent more than four nights. Partly because I dont want to rush and try and do 'everything' at once, and get tired and then can't be bothered.. Sendai is a great compact city, with a great 'loople' bus service. Things were a little further away than I thought so this was handy, plus I get lost quite easily. Tohoku love their arts and crafts and they were proudly on display to see and purchase in Sendai, which I particularly like. I wanted to go to Fukushima-shi for a day, as it is only about 30 mins away, but I didnt get around to it this time. There was LOTS I didnt see this trip, but I will catch up on them next trip :)
A regional center (largest city in Tohoku) with lots of big shops and restaurants (less crowded compared to Tokyo). Many fantastic sights - cultural historical and natural, to visit on day trips by train.
Vibrant city with some good tourist sites to visit, plenty of shopping options and heaps of good restaurants and eateries to choose from. Great place to base yourself and travel on the JR Shinkansen to other places in Tohoku. There are regular Shinkansen services to Tokyo (only 1.5hrs away). I enjoyed my stay in Sendai.
When we booked non-smoking room was not available so we had to book a smoking room but the smoking room we got didn't smell like cigarette at all which we assumed that it was well cleaned and maintained! The hotel was right next to Sendai station and the shopping mall which was very convenience for us to travel around tohoku area using Sendai as a hub.
This is my favorite hotel in Tohoku! I have no disparaging comments about the Sendai Westin. Miss Kato and Miss Mori, staff members at the front desk, again provided tremendous help and unsolicited kindness, helping with reservations for restaurants, taxis, etc. The hotel should be proud to have these two exceptional staff members in their employ.
The breakfast is amazing. Definitely try their Tohoku specialty breakfast. Must book breakfast in advance, sometimes it gets fully booked. There's also free drinks and snack bars that runs from the afternoon to late evening. Rooms are quite spacious for Japan. Close to the station, and there's a 7-11 on the first floor.
Great bang for your budget. Close to Morioka station and include all the basic amenities for you to take a rest on your Tohoku trip. The staff was kind to assist me to dispatch my snowboard back home by courier service. And it includes the great breakfast which is standard for all Route Inn hotels.
Location: Very good! Service: Very good! If you're planning to visit the Tohoku area in Japan, this hotel is highly recommended to stay.
Nicest hotel we stayed at during our 8 night, 5 city road trip around Tohoku. Updated facility, was my wife's favorite hotel of the trip.
New hotel, easy access from interchange. Good for stopping when travelling to/from tohoku Tokyo. Take away coffee machine.
Walking distance from Sendai Station. Near Happinacho shopping street.
The room was very nice and the shower doubled as a bath which was very relaxing. It is only a 10 minute walk from the train station so it was easy getting around to different places.
The staff were very helpful and happy and the location is great because it’s close to Sendai station.
This Ryokan has one of the best hot spring water in Japan. It’s our fourth time to come visit here, and I always cannot appreciate enough everything about this Ryokan. Best Onsen, food is fabulous and staff members are super kind. We will surely come back as always.
The room (I had the basic level option) was gigantic for Japan, with a huge picture window and a view to die for. To say I was blown away upon arrival would be an understatement. The hotel is spacious and uncrowded. I suspect it caters almost exclusively to the Japanese market so some instructions were on rather informal notes, or simply only in Japanese. The rate is breakfast and dinner included but also includes unlimited alcohol from 7pm and coffee/tea/refreshments all day with an icecream bar in the late morning and afternoon. The silence and sleep quality was superb as was the bathroom with shower.
We truly hope to come back. truly lovely. thank you anne
The room was spacious and well kept, and the facilities were perfect. However, what I found the best about Tazawako Lake & Onsen Resort was the staff. We spoke very little Japanese and used a translation app, and even then, a wonderful gentleman at the front desk spoke excellent English and accommodated us with such kindness! Our main reason for staying was to be able to attend a fedtival in Kamihinokinai. We hadn't realised the trains stopped running and nearly gave up hope, but he helped us organise a taxi from the hotel and back again. We had all but given up on being able to get to the festival, but he was incredibly kind and patient and worked beyond expectations to help us attend! The staff were wonderful and made the experience 100 times better. Also, the breakfast buffet and view of the mountains in the snow were 10/10.
Beautiful views, food was delicious, staff was very helpful.
Clean and comfortable, lightings were bright. Even though it's on the west side of the station and you have to go through the walking tunnel if you are on the Eastern side, but there's another little mall there, and a supermarket too.
