Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.
The Pub across the road does not serve food. There are several places to eat roughly 1 mile away, a 15 minute walk. The Mayflower Village Pub served excellent meals and drinks. Ristorante Italiano also served very good Italian food. There is a Subway close by that is open for breakfast. We Ubered from the bus station and to the cruise terminal.

We went to Southampton to go to the Mayflower theatre which is good value compared to London theatres. It has lots of shows and good facilities. We will go back. We also had a good dinner at Papillon which is opposite the theatre. We stayed at the Ibis which is good value and well located for the Mayflower.

If visiting Southampton stay closer to city centre.
If visiting Southampton stay closer to city centre. This hotel was practically surrounded by a building site. Drink were extortionate, limited food available not as described on website. Saving grace lovely reasonable pub/restaurant within a few minutes walk.

We stayed in 003.
We stayed in 003. Very spacious but this is what facilities I should have had.
The spacious family room features a tea and coffee maker and a seating area, as well as a private bathroom boasting a bath. The well-equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, kitchenware, a microwave and a toaster. This family room features a sofa, heating and a flat-screen TV. The unit has 2 beds.
All we got was the tea & coffee making facilities. Table in there but nothing else.
Rooms spacious but found lounge & beds very uncomfortable. Thankfully only stayed the one night.
Quiet & grounds lovely.
Really enjoyed our two night stay. The room was comfortable, clean and well appointed.
Breakfast was included in the price and the choice of food was very good.
The hotel is very close to the Westquay Centre where there is a great choice of shops and restaurants.
The hotel is close to the Cruise Terminal. While the Cruise Terminal may look close I suggest you take a taxi which the Hotel Concierge arranged for us.
When we next cruise out of Southampton The Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour will definitely be our hotel of choice.
Wonderful apartment right off High Street - we loved our king bed with a nice view towards Town Quay Park, and our own private bathroom off the hall, across the room. Great location, walkable around the old city with its interesting past, its many still-intact walls, and Titanic history. Joe was very personable, and we enjoyed some interesting chats together. We appreciated the morning coffee, cereal and toast before starting our day. Would definitely stay again at Joe's place if we are ever back in Southampton!
This hotel is OK for a night as its close to the center of town etc. We had asked for a Twin room when booking but this was not given when checking in . Our room overlooked a noisy McDonalds open 24/7, so a lot of noise through the night, which I know is not the Hotel's fault. Parking our car at hotel was £10 a night on top of room rate was quite fair. Breakfast could be a bit more hygienic, cheap ham and cheese just left lying out, nothing covered at all, so went elsewhere.
I had travelled by train and it’s just 10/15 mins walk from station I had ground floor room which was lovely very clean plenty tea coffee etc just could not find a fault also great communication right up to day of arrival they don’t serve breakfast which was fine I brought mine I would highly recommend this Hotel easy walk into town too and if cruising from new cruise terminal Horizon it’s a 20/25 min walk
The spacious grounds were a bonus, hotel is in a beautiful setting. The building is attractive and our room was a good size with a reasonable bathroom. It was well-equipped and comfortable. Felt like being in the country but actually in the suburbs of Southampton and very convenient for visiting my son at university.
Large free car park - unlike the Premier Inn at Southampton airport which not only charges for the car park but it’s too small for all the guests so you end up driving round looking for somewhere to park.
Large soap dispensers provided by sink and in shower - no single use plastic in bathrooms like some hotels.
The Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel was great. The room was beautiful and they accommodated my mobility issues by putting me on the first floor. Perfectly located 5-10 min walk to a major shopping outlet and 5 min walk to the waterfront. You have incredible dining options right outside the Hotel door.
Hotel was booked prior to a cruise originating in Southampton. The hotel is good , staff very helpful and friendly . Many attractions like parks and museums within walking distance and the hotel enjoys being within close reach of the cruise terminals but far enough away to allow the city to be enjoyed.
The bed was super comfortable. The views behind the hotel are incredible. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was so good, the staff went out of their way to happily serve us after seeing how we had such a long day of traveling before arriving. The proximity to the port was nice.
Having previously lived in Southampton, I was always keen to stay at this boutique hotel in the centre of town.
The location is excellent, and the look and feel of the hotel is very cosy and comfortable.
Couldn't fault the facilities, the service or the quality of the food.
It was convenient to both the bus station and not too far for the cruise port. The apt was just off a nice pedestrian area of stores and an ATM was steps away. I likes that there was a fan, as it was historically hot in England at the time.
Dinner and breakfast was amazing, I am coeliac so needed gluten free and the waiting staff were brilliant , helpful and knew what I could and couldn't have. Comfy bed , nice view from room . Close to shopping at Southampton west quay.
Excellent breakfast wide selection available.
Location was perfect for our visit to Southampton.
ALL the hotel staff we meet were very polite, warm & welcoming and helpful - really outstanding!
We had an amazing room with a nice view. The hotel is very pretty and has lots of activities available in the lounge. Location is perfect, near the sea and town center. Very good experience 😊
Pleasantly surprised after my visit to the Holiday Inn in Southampton City. The property was clean, the room was comfortable and breakfast was lovely and fresh. Good price too.
Location is a short walk from Westquay or Southampton high street, Room also has a smart tv which is a bonus. All round good place to go for a short break.
